He is most well known for composing Miki Matsubara’s 1979 hit song “Mayonaka no Door – Stay With Me”, which helped to set off the global City Pop sensation, and has gained an astonishing number of plays on Youtube, Spotify, and Apple Music. His compositions combine western grooves with his uniquely melancholic melodies, and the artists he has worked with including Momoko Kikuchi, Mariya Takeuchi, Anri, and Omega Tribe, have all gained worldwide acclaim. In this interview, he shared stories from his long career including how “Mayonaka no Door – Stay With Me” was created, and his analysis of why Japanese music has become popular worldwide.
